Trapeze Wire
08. Mar 2010 at 20:51

My helm acquired a second hand 4000 last year which we started to sail towards the end of the season. I've read that the factory fitted trapeze wires are too long and it is better to shorten them. The '101 Top Tips' suggest 4m length of wire. Before we start cutting, what's the opinion of the experts? Undecided

The 'Tweaking tips' document suggests:

Cut the wire down in length to a distance of
between 3700-3900mm from the T-Terminal
·  Fit a hard eye in the free end of the wire
·  Use a piece of rope to join the wire to the top
of the clamcleat, with a disc or similar for a
handle. No need to replace the clamcleat
with the Holt trapeze specific (as photo) but
some people do. Whilst handles are
personal taste, these ones reduce potential
crews teeth damage and are very easy to
use.

I think ours are about 3900.  I can't think of any reason to be shy about doing this - you're replacing the lower section with spectra which can be made longer or shorter in any case, according to preference and/or crew weight.

Hope this helps.

Class rules state that you must have at least 3500mm of wire, so anywhere between that and 4m is fine. The supplied ones are/were about 4500mm which meant the handles were really low, making wire to wire tacking/going out with a straight arm alsmost impossible.

Definitely worth doing, and you can always fine tune by changing the length of the strings.

What's a hard eye and how does it look and most importantly, how is it fixed to the wire?

I'm Dutch speaking, so sorry if this is an obvious question.

A hard eye is where the wire is crimped around a thimble.
